Catalogue Note

This holistic family principle -- "think thoroughly before taking action, be strict with oneself and lenient towards others" -- prompted the owner of Sanyu Tang (hall of generous abundance) to cultivate a collection of Chinese Paintings and Calligraphy based on high standards. The collection focuses on Qing dynasty and early Republic period artworks, and is the culmination of childhood interest and a belief that art is the highest form of self-expression. To establish academic rigor for the Sanyu Tang collection, the distinguished collector and connoisseur since 2005 has devoted himself to an immense undertaking of archiving and publishing every artwork in the collection. Lots 419 – 423, drawn from the Sanyu Tang collection, include four pieces that were published in Paintings and Calligraphy from the Involvers of The Hundred Days' Reform and The Self-Strengthening Movement.
