the flat backed cistern of ribbed pear shape, surmounted by a domed cover, painted with pheasants amongst flowers and foliage, the fluted basin similarly decorated
Condition
The crown of the cistern, specially around the heads of the makara fish and the two ends of the rim have been restored with visible overpaint and extensive overspray on the upper section of the flat back. The rim has a glazed-over chip to the centre. The back of the cover and the ends of the rim had been restored with visible overpaint and extensive overspray, possibly to conceal chips and associated cracks. The basin with a warped rim, and small enamel flakes particularly to the interior. Some frits around the rim had been filled with gilt. There are general gilding and enamel wear/loss and surface scratches. Minor glaze firing imperfections such as fritting, iron spots and burst glaze bubbles.
