the deep rounded sides rising from a short spreading foot to an everted rim, finely carved around the lower body with ruyi and lotus lappet bands, covered overall with a bluish-green glaze, the base with a six-character mark within a double circle in underglaze-blue

This bowl has a 11cm crack to the foot, which runs up part of the side, with associated arc-shaped cracks running off it through the foot, which is associated to an 8cm crack to the interior foot. There are some very minor glazed inconsistencies to the rim and some minor scratches to the glaze to the interior.

Combining elegant form, perfect celadon glaze and excellent relief design, the present bowl is an outstanding example of monochrome-glazed porcelain of the Yongzheng period. Similar Yongzheng bowls are extremely rare and only a few examples appear to be recorded. One in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, was included in the Museum’s Memorial Exhibition The Charles Hoyt Collection, Boston, 1952, cat. no. 440. A similar bowl from the Hall Family Collection, no. 392, was sold in our New York rooms, 5^th November 1977, lot 227, again in our Hong Kong rooms, 28^th November 1978, lot 197, and is illustrated in Sotheby's Hong Kong. Twenty Years, Hong Kong, 1993, no. 314. Two other bowls of this type were sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 20^th May 1981, lot 819, and 25^th November 1981, lot 313. Another bowl was sold at Christie’s Hong Kong, 30th May 2006, lot 1346. A bowl of similar pattern, but of Guangxu mark and period, was exhibited at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1983, and the National Museum of History, Taipei, in 1985, and is illustrated in Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing from the Kwan Collection, Hong Kong, 1983, pl. 149.
