Catalogue Note

In 1976, Burt Britton of the legendary Strand Bookstore in lower Manhattan, published Self-Portrait: Book People Picture Themselves, a collection of self-portraits he had solicited from many of the more famous clients and visitors to the store. Although a large number of these were published in the book, many others have remained unpublished. The present collection contains both published and unpublished drawings.

Among the writers and others included are Kathy Acker, William Wharton, Paddy Chayefsky, René Ricard, Arthur Kopit, Francine Prose, Denise Levertov, Israel Horovitz, Peter Orlovsky, May Sarton, Lanford Wilson, Terence McNally, Gerard Malanga, Marguerite Young, James McCourt, Diane DiPrima, Michael McClure, Richard Wilbur, William Maxwell, A. R. Ammons, Louis Simpson, May Swenson, William Meredith, Ntozake Shange, Gregory Corso, and Ted Jonas.
