3 volumes. 8vo (10 3/4 x 7 ins.; 275 x 180 mm). Half-titles. 155 hand colored lithographic plates by J.T. Bowen; very clean, almost entirely unspotted, even the tissue guards remain clean. Contemporary gilt green morocco and marbled boards; joints rubbed with some minor shelf wear.

Catalogue Note

The octavo edition was seen through the press by Audubon's sons, John W. and Victor, as the author was in declining health during its preparation and died in January of 1851. Bound copies of the octavo edition with the V.G. Audubon imprint, including some in publisher's bindings, have been cited with various combinations of dates.
