Catalogue Note

The Benjamin Franklin Papers Online is unaware of the present document, but does publish its companion, a bond of the same date agreeing to pay Franklin six hundred pounds in exchange for the assignment an "Indenture bearing Date the Twenty fifth Day of June One thousand Seven hundred and fifty four Made between Sarah Sober late of the said City Widow Deceased of the One part And Richard Peters late of the said City: Esquire and the said Benjamin Franklin of the Other Part." The present document completes the transaction: "Know all men by these presents That I, Benjamin Franklin Surviving Trustee in the hereunto annexed Indenture named for divers good causes and Considerations … do Assign transfer, and setover unto John Redman of the City of Philadelphia, Practitioner of Physick … All that the within Indenture and Two Bonds or Obligations therein mentioned, And all … sums of Money due … And all my Right and Interest therein To hold to him the said John Redman his Executors Administrators and Assigns."  

John Redman studied medicine at Philadelphia, Edinburgh, and Leyden, where he received his M.D. He was one of the first staff members of the Philadelphia Hospital, and was involved in the controversies over smallpox inoculation (which he supported) and treatment of yellow fever. He was one of the founders and the first president of of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia.
