Catalogue Note

first edition, first issue, with 1913 on the verso of the title page. The present has the variant "Metven" at foot of spine and quotes around "Narcissus" on verso of the half-title.

A printer's strike delayed publication until 1914, causing the publisher to cancel and tip in new titles in all but approximately 50 copies. A commercial success, the novel quickly went into five printings.
