Catalogue Note

first edition, first issue, presentation copy to elsie hueffer, inscribed "To Elsie M. Hueffer from Joseph Conrad 1901"

The relationship  Joseph and Jessie Conrad had with Ford Maddox and Elsie Hueffer was not always an easy one. Though the two authors collaborated on three novels, The Inheritors, Romance and The Nature of a Crime, there was strain from the Hueffers living with the Conrads and Joseph's affection for Elsie. These tensions no doubt contributed to the depiction of marital discord in Ford's masterpiece The Good Soldier. a wonderful association.
