2 volumes 8vo (8 3/4 x 5 1/4 in.; 223 x 134 mm). Numerous engraved plates, folding map, inscribed on both title pages by Frederick Catherwood to Thomas Burgon: "Mr. Tho. Burgon from his friend F. Catherwood". Modern black cloth with original gilt panels on covers. foxing, soiling and dampstaining.

First edition. Presentation copy to the merchant, archaeologist and collector Thomas Burgon.

Burgon was a merchant who traded between London, Greece,Turkey, and Smyrna. He was also a connoisseur of Greek antiquities and supervised the 1813 excavations in Athens, during which the Panathenaic prize amphora London B 160 (now on display in the British Museum) was discovered. 
He gave his name to the Burgon group, a group of Attic black-figure vase painters active in the middle third of the sixth century BC.
