Catalogue Note

First edition of Sir Walter Scott's rare first book. Presentation copy, inscribed on the title,"George Chalmers Esq., from his sincere & obedt. Servant, the Tranaslator." Chalmers was a lawyer and antiquary who offered Scott some of his first literary encouragement. Also present on the title is an inscription in an unidentified contemporary hand identifying Scott as the translator.
