Description

  • Friendship's garland: being the conversations, letters, and opinions of the late Arminius, Baron von Thunder-Ten-Tronkh.... London: Smith, Elder and Co., 1871.
  • Paper, ink, leather
8vo (180 x 115 mm). Original white cloth stamped in black and gilt; minor rubbing and light wear to ends.

First edition, an evocative presentation copy, "Thos. Hughes, from his old schoolfellow."  The recipient is famous for his Tom Brown's Schooldays, first published in 1857.  This was set at Rugby School, where Arnold's father, Dr. Thomas Arnold, was headmaster, and perhaps the most widely known English schoolmaster of the 19th century. Hughes and Arnold went on from Rugby to attend Oxford together.
