Catalogue Note

first edition, presentation copy, "Thomas Linton, Esq. in grateful remembrance of the visit, Nov. 20, '77, from his cordially ever Robert Browning. Nov. 22, '77."  Browning's very literal translation of this classic is seen as an incredibly idiosyncratic "transcription"  and is thought to have inspired Houseman's "Fragment of a Greek Tragedy."  A work that is strangely uncommon at auction.
