Garrard left Westport in 1846 in a Santa Fe wagon train and returned to St. Louis in the summer of 1847. His account describes the Taos Massacre and the subsequent trials of prisoners. During his travels, Garrard met several well-known figures, notably Jim Beckworth and Kit Carson.
