Catalogue Note
First edition of an exceeding rare private printing of a poem written in Tennyson's capacity as poet laureate, signed by him at the end of the poem. The poem was first regularly published as an epilogue to a new edition of Idylls of the King (1872-3). Two separate printings are recorded. One, described by Wise as "now of extreme rarity," is in an octavo format, and has a proper title-page at the front, and a leaf at the end blank save for a printer's imprint. Wise quotes records to the effect that only 50 copies were printed. The present printing has no title-page or final leaf, and is in quarto format with all edges gilt. There were most likely only a handful of copies printed.
