Catalogue Note

First edition. A fine large-paper set on thick paper, with a remarkable provenance, having belonged to William Taylor (1765-1836), poet, man of letters, and scholar of contemporary German literature. Taylor was the moving spirit behind this anthology, the compilation of which he suggested after a meeting with Southey in 1798. He contributed to both volumes and has made manuscript corrections in several places in this copy.

The Annual Anthology was an important romantic anthology, with contributions by Coleridge (27 contributions), Lamb, Joseph Cottle, Robert Lovell, and George Dyer. Southey's unpatriotic "War Poem" is included in volume 1.
