Catalogue Note

first edition of the poet's first substantial poem; privately printed in an edition of just 250 copies, though only 70 were distributed at the time by Shelley personally (usually after removing his address from the title page - the present copy is free from this mutilation).   A fine and very attractive example of a book that saw printer's jailed for the work being a blasphemous libel. No other edition appeared until a piracy of 1821.
