- A Narrative of the Adventures of a Greenwich Pensioner. Newcastle: Printed by R.T. Edgar, 1827
- paper
FIRST EDITION, 8vo (195 x 110mm.), [ii], v-viii, 9-212pp., woodcut vignette on title (see footnote), contemporary purple half morocco, purple ribbed cloth boards, uncut
Catalogue Note
A lively below-decks account by a teenage sailor of his on- and off-shore experiences from 1804 to 1812, in Quebec, Montevideo, Rio de Janeiro, and the Mediterranean during the Napoleonic War.
THE WORK IS VERY RARE, and unrecorded apart from in Hugo's The Bewick Collector, no.4362, where the woodcut vignette of a ship on the title is attributed to Thomas Bewick. The work is anonymous, but the introduction is by "G.W.", beneath which the author or another hand has written "George Watson".
