Catalogue Note

Stuart was a prolific explorer of Australia, undertaking no less than six separate expeditions. The current item is the first separate publication of Stuart's journal from his most important expedition, on which he reached and named the McDonnell Ranges and the Finke River; Stuart also raised a British flag at what he considered to be the centre of Australia. The expedition was subsequently attacked by Aborigines forcing Stuart to turn back. “Upon his return to Adelaide Stuart was fêted at a public banquet and hailed as the man who had opened the interior” (Wantrup).
