Catalogue Note

Stern was a missionary among the Judaic Ethiopians, and among those held captive by the emperor Téwodros II after a worsening of diplomatic relations. The crisis prompted a British military intervention commanded by General Robert Napier after which the hostages were released and Téwodros took his own life.
