Catalogue Note
Eight of the voyages by this English sailor were to the Antarctic and South Seas. “Smith’s visit to the South Shetland Islands aboard the Schooner Hetty… during the austral summer of 1820 took place only a year after the islands’ discovery: Smith’s narrative constitutes one of the earliest known – and for that matter, one of the only – published accounts of the sealing activities there” (Rosove). Other places visited include the Mediterranean (Malta), South America, New Zealand and the Sandwich Islands.
