Catalogue Note
Smith was first mate aboard the brig Zephyr, captured by pirates en route from Jamaica to England. He was detained as a navigator and translator and coerced into a life of piracy. “Smith escaped from the pirates, but was arrested when recognized in Havana and brought to England in irons on board the Sybille to be tried at the Old Bailey on 19 December 1823 on various charges of piracy in the West Indies. He claimed he had been forced into the acts of piracy, and was acquitted” (ODNB).
