HMS Guardian, Riou’s first command, hit an iceberg en route to Australia, with a cargo of convicts. Many hands abandoned ship, but Riou remained, and, making running repairs all the while, steered the ship to port over an arduous nine-weeks, saving the lives of those who chose to stay on board.
