Catalogue Note

Raleigh undertook this venture in 1595 and, with the adventurer and scholar Lawrence Kemys, sailed to the coast of what is now Venezuela in search of the Spaniards' City of Gold, or El Dorado. Here they sailed up the Orinoco River for a distance of about 480 kilometres into the interior of Guiana and were able to take home with them specimens containing gold.

There was considerable interest in Raleigh’s exploits: three issues of this 1596 edition were published and Raleigh's account was included in Hakluyt, de Bry, Hulsius, and many other great collections of voyages.
