Catalogue Note

Sir Harry St. George Ord was the first Colonial Governor of the Straits Settlements (1867-1873). The King had temporarily moved his court to Whae-Whan to observe the eclipse of 18 August (the subject of the final three photographs), Ord being invited to combine diplomacy with science. On the return journey to Singapore Ord visited the Sultan Omar at Tringganu and then to Phang to arbitrate a dispute between the Bandaharah and the Maharajah of Johore.
