Catalogue Note
Nicholas accompanied Samuel Marsden on his historic mission to the Bay of Islands in December 1814 and was his close companion for the duration of the stay at the end of February 1815. "Nicholas's description, of the crowded days, the meetings with the leading chiefs, the short journeys, with his first impressions of the Maori culture are of the greatest value" (Bagnall).
