Catalogue Note

George Nares (1831-1915) had been the captain of HMS Challenger on its three-year circumnavigation of the globe. The purpose of the British Arctic expedition of 1875-1876, in the vessels Alert and Discovery, was chiefly to reach the North Pole. In the end, the expedition got further north than any previous, but fell short of the pole after an outbreak of scurvy led Nares to call off the voyage and return early.

The contents leaf refers to an “Admiralty chart of the Polar Seas (issued separately)”; for this, see lot 921.
