Catalogue Note
In 1924, Norton was selected as leader of the third Everest expedition, which would be the first serious summit attempt. Climbing without oxygen, Norton reached 28,126 feet, a record which would not be surpassed for 54 years. A few days later, Irvine and Mallory undertook another summit bid, during which both of them were lost.
