Howard-Bury, in the face of opposition to a British expedition to Everest from both the Tibet and the British governments, travelled at his own expense to India in order to lobby officials there on behalf of the Royal Geographical Society. In acknowledgement of his tenacity, he was appointed leader of the first ever Everest Expedition when permission was granted by Tibet in 1921.
