Catalogue Note

Having been unable to obtain leave to join the first Everest expedition in 1921, Bruce was subsequently appointed captain of the second "assault" in 1922. Although he was himself too old to take part in the climbing, his detailed knowledge of the area and of Himalayan languages was invaluable and he was looked upon as a model for the leaders of the many expeditions which followed.
