Catalogue Note
"The sketches are not designed to illustrate the progress of the Expedition, or any stirring events in its history, so much as the appearance of the strange and desolate country by the shores of which the ships slowly steamed, the wonderful phenomena of the sky, and the effects of light and shade produced by a midnight sun, or a mid-day moon, on the ice-bound rocks which form the scenery of the region" (introduction).
THIS IS A RARE SPECIAL ISSUE OF THIS WORK which usually goes under the title of Shores of the Polar Sea. A Narrative of the Arctic Expedition. The introduction explains that the plates "are here reproduced apart from the original text, in order to make them more generally accessible; but it has been thought desirable to append to the portfolio a short account of each picture, gathered from the narrative of the Artist".
We have been unable to trace a copy of this special issue at auction and there is just one copy recorded on COPAC.
