“Mathison gives an account of Rio de Janeiro and its environs and an overview of Brazilian history. The rest of the book concerns Chile, Peru, and the Hawaiian Islands… Much information is given on the cultural life of the various places visited, including Hawaii. Among the Hawaiian materials are accounts of the natives, the missionaries, the government and the royal family, shipping, and the speculation of the King in the Canton trade” (Hill).
