Catalogue Note
After reaching Rio in 1816, the Alceste continued on to the Cape of Good Hope, and then to China and beyond to Korea, the Ryukyu Islands, Macao and Manila, before being lost in the Gasper Strait off the coast of Sumatra. A long account of the experiences of the shipwrecked sailors, the attacks of the Malay pirates and their ultimate rescue is included here.
