Catalogue Note
The Resolute under Captain Kellett was part of Belcher's five ship squadron. It was abandoned in May 1854, and eventually drifted into Baffin Bay. It was found by a whaler, bought by the U.S. government and returned to Britain where it was presented to Queen Victoria. M'Dougall describes how the crew was kept entertained whilst wintering in the Arctic, their sledge journeys and encounters with musk oxen, polar bears etc.
