Catalogue Note
A PACIFIC RARITY: ABPC records only two copies sold at auction. ESTC locates only six copies, none in the UK.
The preface is signed “C.L.”, i.e. Colin Lauder, a surgeon aboard the Queen Charlotte. “A considerable portion of this text is devoted to the author’s observations on Hawaii… and his comments on various aspects of Hawaiian material culture are not found elsewhere” (Forbes).
For other accounts of this voyage by Dixon and Portlock see Exploration and Discovery, parts 2 and 3, lots 398 and 1034.
