Catalogue Note

This very rare anonymous work is a first-hand account of the shipwreck and events and differs from Keate's own An Account of the Pelew Islands (see lot 706). It was most probably written by Peter Barker, the second mate, or John Polkingham, the petty officer and carpenter. Another anonymous account was published in the same year, in Perth, but it is merely a rewritten and reordered version of Keate's original (see Hill 908).
