Catalogue Note

Petherick travelled to central Africa as consul, and as an envoy for the Royal Geographic Society. He was meant to meet Speke and Grant at Gondokoro with boats and provisions for their journey down the Nile to Khartoum, but when they were well overdue, Petherick and his wife headed into the interior on a trading expedition. When Speke eventually arrived Petherick was not present.
