Description

  • Malory, Thomas
  • Morte Darthur... the original edition of Caxton revised for modern use, with an introduction by Sir Edward Strachey... Macmillan and Co., 1889
  • PAPER
8vo, from the library of Aubrey Beardsley with signature ("Aubrey Vincent Beardsley | 18/7/91") and line drawing of Merlin on front free endpaper, original green cloth lettered in gilt on spine, collector's folding box, some light soiling and spotting, binding worn with hinges and joints splitting

It appears that Beardsley signed this copy three days before his nineteenth birthday. Less than two years later he would receive a commission from J.M. Dent to provide the illustrations for a new edition. It would become the work which made Beardsley's name. This copy includes a number of pencil underlinings and notes not thought to be in Beardsley's hand.
