Catalogue Note

Dr James Alexander had studied at the University of Glasgow and had been a military surgeon at the Battle of Waterloo. He met Byron in Genoa when serving as medical attendant to Lord Berwick, British Minister at Turin, and saw him regularly in 1822-23. Although Byron looked to Alexander for medical advice he was not his regular physician. He did, however, recommend Dr Bruno, who became Byron's personal physician, and also helped in the provision of stores for Byron's Greek expedition.
