Catalogue Note
The publication of Byron's Oriental romance, The Giaour, in 1813 came at the height of his popularity and consolidated his literary reputation. John Murray had printed 15 copies of the poem in March 1813, which Byron had sent to friends before finally agreeing that the poem be published in his own name. The Giaour was advertised in The Morning Chronicle the day before this letter was written. It was natural that one of the pre-publication copies should have been given to Hodgson, a friend from Cambridge who shared his literary interests, including his love of the Augustan poets, and was a frequent contributor to The Critical Review and Monthly Review.
