Catalogue Note
"...She is a beautiful Girl, & I love her, nor do I despair, unless some damned accident intervenes..." (Byron to John Pigot on Anne Houson, 13 January 1807)
The only known manuscript of one of Byron's early poems written for Anne Houson, the daughter of the Rev. Henry Houson of Southwell. Byron wrote at least seven love poems for her in the early months of 1807, most of which - including this - remained unpublished in Byron's lifetime. As the note at the bottom of the current manuscript shows, in 1828 it was in the hands of Byron's friend Elizabeth Pigot, who showed it to Thomas Moore. It was duly included in the 1832 edition of Byron's works edited by Moore.
