Catalogue Note
The Independent minister Isaac Watts (1674-1748) is best remembered as the father of English Hymnody, but he was also an influential prose writer and theologian, as well as playing a significant role in religious developments in New England. He was a highly popular preacher from his church on Bury Street in London, but only eleven manuscripts of his sermons are recorded in the Index of English Literary Manuscripts. This manuscript appears to be previously unrecorded. AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPTS BY WATTS ARE RARE, AND NO SERMON HAS BEEN OFFERED AT AUCTION FOR TWENTY YEARS.
