Catalogue Note

This kind letter of thanks was written to the 12 year-old daughter of the artist Ernst Riess. The family acted as a host to Manshankar (Manu) Trivedi, a member of Gandhi's inner circle who was studying medicine in Freiburg. Gerda had a cross inscribed "God is Love", and when Trivedi informed her that this was one of Gandhi's favourite sayings she asked that the cross be sent to the Mahatma in India.
