Catalogue Note
One of Shepard's illustrations for his 1931 edition of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows. The illustration comes from chapter eleven, ('Like Summer Tempests Came His Tears') and it was published on page 259 of the Methuen edition.
This was not one of the drawings offered by Shepard for sale at his exhibition in November/December 1933 at The Sporting Gallery. A few months before the exhibition, the artist gave this drawing as a 21st birthday present to the present owner's mother in March 1933. Cousins of the present owner's mother were friends and neighbours of the Shepards in Guildford.
