Joseph Crawhall (1821-1896), son of a Newcastle ropemaker, was introduced to Keene in the 1870s and became one of his most frequent collaborators. Having always been interested in illustration and printing Crawhall compiled albums of his humorous drawings, from which Keene reworked over 200 examples for publication in Punch. Although he asked for no recognition of his contribution, Keene routinely wrote in his letters of the great debt he felt and regularly presented his friend with his own sketches, despite Crawhall's protestations: "...you don't know the value of your work. The reward is too great" (The Life and Letters of Charles Samuel Keene, Layard, 1892, p.196).

Crawhall's albums are now in the collections of the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow.
