Catalogue Note
General Sir John Vandeleur (1763-1849) commanded the 4th Cavalry Brigade during the Waterloo campaign. Lt Col. Ponsonby served under him as commanding offier of the 12th Light Dragoons both at the inconclusive engagement at Quatre Bras and at Waterloo two days later, where Vandeleur took command of the entire British cavalry after Lord Uxbridge was wounded.
