Description

  • Painted pine and iron.
  • 60.5cm. high, 36.5cm. diameter; 2ft., 1ft. 4in.
the wrought-iron bands decorated with a freize of black japanned and gilt chinoiserie, the sides with Chinese figures and landscapes over a cream ground and with the arms of Crewe, Barons Crewe

A very decorative object. With great charm. Wear to painted decoration as to be expected.

Catalogue Note

This charming barrel was used by the Crewe-Milnes family as a garden seat and appears in an early 20th century photograph of their 'Winter Garden' at Crewe House, London between two planter's chairs. The Duchess latterly had the piece installed in the Hall at West Horsley.
