Condition

This is a very crisp cast, very good in all details, of the late 18th or early 19th century. The bronze is in very good condition overall with some minor wear to the patina at several places consistent with age and handling, and a few minor scratches to the base. Very decorative bronze.

Catalogue Note

Un groupe de Nessus et Déjanire est mantionné pour la première fois le 30 avril  1577 dans un document des archives de la famille Salviati faisant état du paiement d'un bronze de ce sujet à Giambologna. Plusieurs variantes du modèle initial ont par la suite été déclinées, attestant du grand succès de ce dernier.
