Condition

Enamel in good condition. Surface with usual scattering of small firing flaws. Counter enamel with patches of rust-coloured discoloration. Frame has been restored.

Catalogue Note

Selon l'inscription peinte au dos, cet émail aurait été réalisé d'après un portrait de Sir John Russel par William Dobson (1611-1646) se trouvant dans la collection du comte Spencer. Dans un portrait de Richard Neville, réalisé par Dobson vers 1643, le modèle est vêtu à l'identique d'une armure sur une veste jaune à galons, la taille ceinte d'une large étoffe rouge et un ruban de satin bleu noué autour du cou (Londres, National Portrait Gallery, inv. n° NPG 5382). Dobson s'illustra, notamment, par ses portraits de soldats royalistes qu'il réalisa à Oxford pendant la Guerre Civile.
