Condition
The man playing the horn with a fine fracture to his proper right foot, probably a casting joint, the attribut in his proper right hand missing.
Some minor verde gris and oxdation.

Catalogue Note
Cette paire de bronzes est à rapprocher d'un ensemble d'oeuvres récemment attribuées à un artiste dont l'identité demeure un mystère et qui est désigné sous le nom de Master of the Bull Hunt, en référence à l'important ensemble de figurines en bronze relatant une chasse au taureau avec force minutie et conservé au Suermondt-Ludwig Museum à Aix-la-Chapelle (cf. op. cit., fig. 67). Jennifer Montagu indique que ces figurines ont connues diverses attributions à des sculpteurs italiens ou nordiques et qu'elles sont aujourd'hui données à un artiste ayant travaillé dans l'entourage du napolitain Lorenzo Vaccaro (1655-1706) ou Gian Domenico Vinacci (1625-1695) dont l'oeuvre présente effectivement de grandes similitudes stylistiques. Nous retrouvons dans le groupe du Suermondt-Ludwig Museum un chasseur Maure au crâne rasé et aux traits expressifs dont le type physique se rapproche tout à fait de celui que nous présentons. Enfin, un second groupe de figurines en bronze doré, dépendant anciennement de la collection Yves-Saint-Laurent et figurant une scène de Chasse à la Licorne (collection privée), comprend un chasseur courant torse nu en soufflant dans une corne identique au nôtre.
