la Russie signée et datée E. Quesnel 45
traces d'une inscription RSBOE... et le numéro 8523 inscrit à l'encre à l'intérieur - bronze
- Haut. 58 cm et 53 cm; height 22 4/5 in. and 21 in.
La Russie, représentée par une femme nue, coiffée d'une couronne de sapin, drapée d'une peau d'ours, tenant une rame ornée d'un aigle bicéphale couronné symbolisant le Tsar; elle s'appuie sur un vase d'où coule de l'eau, assise sur une proue de navire; à ses pieds un filet de pêche à poisson et une corne d'Abondance. L'Angleterre personnifiée par une femme nue assise sur une nef, coiffée d'une couronne de roseaux, un drapé autour de ses hanches; elle tient un trident à la main; la poupe ornée de l'écusson et la devise royale HONI.SOIT.QUI.MAL.Y.PENSE.DIEU ET.MON.DROIT; au sol gisent des instruments scientifiques et de navigation ainsi qu'un globe.

Condition
Very good condition overall on the two bronzes, very crisp casts good in all details. Very minor wear to the patina and surface dirt consistent with age and handling with a few minor scratches.

Catalogue Note
De 1821 à 1834, le ciseleur Quesnel s'associe au fondeur Louis Richard. Ils auront pour clients de prestigieux sculpteurs tels que David d'Angers, Rude ou Barye. A nouveau seul, il collabore avec Christophe Fratin, James Pradier, Charles Cumberworth et Charles-Auguste Fraikin. En 1845, année de fonte de nos bronzes, Quesnel peinant à maintenir son entreprise à flots en cède la gestion à son fils.
